Dear Senator Kakoschke-Moore

I am writing in relation to your recent correspondence outlining your request for audit coverage of the National Affordable Housing Agreement, with a focus on funding allocated for women’s shelters and safe houses in the context of the Australian Government’s commitment to women’s safety and combatting family violence.

As advised in my earlier letter, I have considered your request in the context of the development of the Australian National Audit Office’s Annual Audit Work Program for 2017–18. On the basis of recent audit coverage of rental affordability programs and competing priorities for audit coverage across the public sector, I have decided not to undertake a performance audit examining National Affordable Housing Agreement at this time.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in the work of the ANAO.

Yours sincerely

Grant Hehir
Auditor-General

Dear Senator Kakoschke-Moore

Request for an audit of the National Affordable Housing Agreement

Thank you for your letter dated 14 November 2016 requesting that I consider undertaking an audit of the National Affordable Housing Agreement, with a focus on funding allocated for women’s shelters and safe houses in the context of the Australian Government’s commitment to women’s safety and combatting family violence.

I note your concerns in relation to the lack of transparency of outputs and outcomes under the National Affordable Housing Agreement for certain funding areas, and will consider including coverage of the Department of Social Service’s administration of the Agreement in the ANAO’s next audit work program. In doing so, I will also take into account any decisions from the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) consideration of a report by officials on homelessness reform options and future funding arrangements which the Assistant Minister for Social Services, Senator Seselja, advised is scheduled for the end of 2016.

Yours sincerely

Grant Hehir
