Dear Senator Duniam

Relocation of the University of Tasmania

I am writing in response to your letter dated 17 August 2022 (received 23 August 2022) seeking feedback in relation to the former Senator the Hon Eric Abetz request that I consider an audit of the planned relocation of the University of Tasmania.

In my response to Mr Abetz’s letter I said that I would consider the matter referred as part of the consultation process undertaken in development of the Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) 2022–23 Annual Audit Work Program (AAWP). The AAWP is designed to reflect the ANAO’s audit strategy and inform the Parliament, government entities and the public of the planned audit coverage for the Australian Government sector. Mr Abetz’s request was considered in relation to other priorities for audit coverage across the public sector and I decided that the matter referred should not replace other areas of audit focus identified in the 2022–23 AAWP.

Dear Auditor-General

I am writing to you regarding correspondence I recently received from a Tasmanian constituent,   in relation to the University of Tasmania's proposal to relocate the Sandy Bay campus to Hobart CBD.

  has raised concerns regarding the campus relocation and the amount of funding being provided by the Australian Government, which is serving as the main source of funding for the University's proposal.

I have been advised by   that my former colleague, Eric Abetz had made representations on behalf of   to you, regarding the use of Commonwealth funds for this proposal.

  has informed me that he is yet to receive any feedback on this matter.

Any feedback or guidance you may be able to provide on this matter, which can be passed onto   would be greatly appreciated.
